Street children

In Kyiv there are over 20,000 street children.
The number of street children in Ukraine varies greatly.
It figures for three figures: 150,000, 550,000 and 750,000.

The children live in sewer tunnels, in attics or in dark and damp basements far below the houses where no one can find them.

The space is about 15 - 20 square meters with sand floor. 10-15 children live there together. There is no toilet but it can be in one of the corners.

In these places they sit and sniff glue, which at least for a little while allows them to forget the cruel reality they live in.

The reasons why they live on the street are many.
· The parents are alcoholics, using drugs
· The parents are in prison
· The children are used to get money, they wash cars, beg, prostitution, etc.
· The guardians take advantage of the children's difficult situation

Most of these children use tobacco, alcohol, sniff glue, take drugs and engage in sexual activities (including prostitution). They live in grossly unhygienic conditions and suffer from various diseases (including HIV). To survive, they steal, beg and prostitute themselves. They are often victims of sexual abuse, violence, child-slave trafficking, and become involved in crime.
